2006 Season Review
Morpeth Cricket Club successfully ran a 1st,
2nd and 3rd senior teams, with the 2006 season being a very successful
one. The 1st XI ended champions of the Northumberland and Tyneside Senior
League A2. This has resulted in their promotion to the A1 division and the
achievement of their 3 year plan on time.
The 2006 season would have to be considered
the most successful in the clubs recent history. The youth policy which is
so prevalent in the cricket club has finally come to fruition, with an
average age of a championship winning side being 23. A fantastic season
was had by the first team leading the A2 division from start to finish
losing only two games in the season.
Promotion to A1 and the championship was clinched and we are proud as a
club to present ourselves as a well rounded side with strong team spirit,
with members enjoying the game they love as well as being successful
within it. The first team was excellently guided by Chris Reagan who had a
brilliant year himself picking up the A2 players player of the year award.
The highlight being scoring three back to back centuries in May of which
few players in the NTSL have managed to do.
Australian Blake Reynolds had another fantastic season scoring over 1000
runs in all competitions and we are proud and honoured as a club that we
have such a lasting impact on him that he has decided to settle here for
the short term. There were other notable performances throughout the
season with strong bowling from junior members of the club Michael and
James Craigs, who at only 16 years old have extremely bright cricketing
futures ahead of them. Strong batting from Stuart Alleway and Ben Maxted
were also notable who both scored over 600 club runs in the season.
The first XI also reached the final of the 20/20 Northumberland Smithson
County Cup losing narrowly to South Northumberland who went onto become
the best side in the land winning the 2007 Cockspur Cup.
The second XI also had a successful year finishing in the top half of the
table. The blend of experience and youth is ideal particularly for
bringing on the 16 and 17 year olds. The aim for 2007 has to be promotion
and if we can win the games that slipped away last year because of a lack
of experience, we should do well.
Winter nets commenced in late January with the largest turn out that I can
remember in the past 8 years. The cricket section is looking very strong,
with a healthy balance sheet, a thriving club membership and we are
forward to taking the section into what will hopefully be another trophy
winning season in 2007.
The junior section continues to thrive at Morpeth Cricket Club with over
150 junior members. This is very important at Morpeth with nearly all of
our current first team being club members for over 15 years and have
successfully progressed through the club to first team level. We again are
thank full to Longhirst Hall for providing what can only be described as
one of the best to places to play cricket in the country. We again hope
for some superb cricket wickets in the 2006/2007 season.
