2nd XI - Morpeth Prosper as Alnwick Fall

In the words of Bob Marley “The sun is shining weather is sweet yeah”. Finally it is here. Morpeth 2nd Team made the trip up to Alnwick for the second away fixture of the season.

Chris Maxted did as he always does and won the toss choosing to bat first on a slightly green wicket.

Morpeth were confident going into a fixture where the opposing team had been bowled out for 30 runs the week before.

With Stephen Cowell off cavorting with Morpeth Rugby team we turned to another aged gentleman Mike Elliott to take the silver haired spot of opening the batting with Ben Kemsley. Off to a perfect start, Morpeth managed to put 100 on the scoreboard before Kemsley was clean bowled after trying for his 8th boundary. Killer Kill Kemsley notched up an impressive 63. Elliott was soon to follow back to the clubhouse with a ‘smashing’ 42 after a run out. The Elliot dabble used to perfect effect a light graze of leather against the willow, tickling the ball most effectively down to fine leg for a gaggle of singles.

Enter the new young talent of Morpeth cricket club Jack Clark. Some lovely proper cricket shots and great shape Clark eased to 16 not out.

Nearing the end of Morpeth’s innings, Paul Wonders got the procession of women (who came to see Ali Clow) going by whacking a quick 22 with some powerful boundary shots. A total of 193 to defend only loosing three wickets. A mild improvement on our last encounter in the league.

It was teatime, the juice flowed and Ben Jones showed us all who was boss in the sandwich department. 6/10.

Morpeth felt rejuvenated and entered the playing field with only victory in mind. Ben Jones and Paul Nyland opened the bowling. B Jones with his usual tight impressive opening spell took the first wicket of the day with Alnwick only reaching 11 runs, a well-placed field allowed a catch at point that Jonty Rhodes would have been proud to hold onto by R Embley. Nyland, the promising young talent from the other end kept good figures but could not grab the much-deserved wicket for his efforts.

Alnwick’s J Eeles, A Scott and M Bateman all managed individual effort of 24, 23 and 27 respectively, but scored to slowly to ever trouble the total put on the board by Morpeth.

Take cover, on came the grenade chucking HB of the pencil family, Mike Elliott. With some nice variation and clever change of pace Elliott took his usual bundle of wickets by coaxing the batsman to try and smash the ball back on to the A1. Figures of 3 for 48 from 13 overs started to make the game look easy. The Morpeth bowlers all had a crack at denting the Alnwick attack, C Maxted and R Embley taking one wicket each. C Maxted with a better and more successful spell than R Embley.

Ben Jones stole the show by cleaning up the middle and tail order of Alnwick 2nd team, finishing with 3 for 18 of 13 over. Heading already for similar honours as last season.

Alnwick failed to reach the total set by Morpeth and finish their allotted overs with only one wicket to spare for 128 runs.

Man of the match: B Kemsley

Richard Embley
