2nd XI -
Does Anybody Know Any Cricketer's?
Morpeth Second team began their campaign much to the surprise of
everyone involved against Annfield Plain away. A brief hiatus in a
dismal display of weather left the window wide open for Morpeth to put
on a carnival performance, smashing our way into the new season and
rocketing to the top of the league in an early bid to gain promotion.
Unfortunately the team who elected to bat first after C Maxted with
slight looser trousers than last year, won the toss and were then bowled
out for 77, a lesser figure that sandwiches consumed by the Lawrence
Brown at tea, which deserves a mentioned as it was an impressive spread,
thumbs up to the tea lady.
Opening the batting were Ben Kemsley and Silver Stephen Cowell. It was
hoped that youth and experience would prosper (I will leave you to Judge
which is which), unfortunately Annfield Plain’s opening bowler who’s
impressive figures were 7 for 25 rattled through the top order. The
wonder of Paul Wonders ceased even quicker than usual as he found
himself waddling back to the pavilion for a duck. The club awaits
payment of the fine incurred.
Morpeth found themselves up against it with R Embley strolling into bat
at number 11. With 42 on the scoreboard things were looking bleak with
the tail end trying to bat out the last twenty-five overs. With some
impressive batting from J Clark, a huge six and a not so huge four from
R Embley managed to take the total to 77 all out after an unfortunate
LBW decision going against Jack who looked like going on to much greater
things than the well put together 30.
On came the bowlers, C Maxted opened the bowling followed by R Embley
who pulled up injured after three overs only to be replaced by another
ginger haired left arm talent J Clark, but Annfield Plain plodded on.
A little ray of sunshine? Black clouds began to descend in more ways
than one, however Morpeth could not even be saved by the weather, asking
Stephen Cowell for a rain dance seemed a little above and beyond the
call of duty at this point. Annfield Plain knocked off the total with
ease only losing one wicket taken by C Maxted after a tight spell with
the ball.
Such songs as the ‘only way is up’ by Yazz spring to mind.
Man of the match: J Clark
Richard Embley
