2nd XI - Morpeth languish over Lanchester

After a dismal display mid week in what proved to be a 18/20 game not in Morpeth’s favour, the 2nd team had the second in a run of three home fixtures at Longhirst.

Chris ‘the terminator’ Maxted, tossed that coin, the crowd gasped, the coin dropped, and of course, Maxted won the toss.

Morpeth Batted first. Stephen ‘Electrolux’ Cowell started in his usual spot accompanied by E Brown, a timely return to Saturday cricket after a boozy spell in the South Hemisphere.

Cowell, like a whippet between the wickets, ran his way to 47 before being dismissed by McPhail who was the most impressive of the Lanchester bowling attack taking 3 for 38.

A little man called ‘Extras’ stole the show however, racking there way up to 50 which was the highest score in Morpeth’s favour for the day, B Jones adding 24 and Paul ‘Chris Akabusi’ Wonders aawwooogged his way to 33. The teams effort totalling 210 for the day.

Mrs Forster, the newly appointed domestic goddess of Morpeth Cricket Club put on a less traditional spread of Baked Potato and chilli. I can tell you that this went down a treat 8/10.

The general consensus was that on such a batting wicket, Morpeth realistically needed 250 to secure a comfortable victory.

Lanchester padded up and went to work.

After a quick game of boules, Stuart Hills and Ben Jones opened the bowling. Kept things relatively tight with Hills bowling out 3 for 42 with 4 maidens. At one stage during Stuart Hills’ attack a cry from slip, “this is like proper cricket”, thank you Mr Steven Cowell.

However the pendulum began to swing towards Lanchester who quickly made up the run rate with some impressive stroke play from D J Wingfield pushing a useful match winning 76.

Lanchester won with four wickets to spare. A plethora of fines were handed out to the Morpeth rabble, with some dropped catches and wayward bowling, the opposition managed 211 with two overs to spare.

Man-of-the-match: Stuart Hills (just for being Stuart)

Richard Embley.
