2nd XI -
Ingram and Brown see off Ponteland
Bank Holiday Monday 26th May 2008, everywhere else bright sunshine
except Morpeth 2nd Team pitch, where the wind blew strongly. C Maxted
won the toss (I’m going to stop putting this because its getting boring)
and decided to bat first on a green hard wicket against Ponteland.
Meikle and Cowell opened the batting, Meilke looked in good form hitting
a quick 34 before being dismissed. Then a fall of wickets for Morpeth
finding themselves at 46 runs for 3 wickets, in steps J Ingram. On the
back of a collective run total of 4 runs from three games Ingram needed
to shine. And that he did, in bucket loads. It was certainly this young
mans day. Interspersed with a useful 25 from the captain and the tail
end, Ingram took strike and posted an incredible 125 not out. The last
wicket partnership stood at 50 with Clow adding 2 to the proceedings.
With sixes being hit into the road out of the ground regularly and some
lovely drives for four Morpeth had a total of 260 to protect going to
tea.
Mrs Forster sure puts on a mean tea, this week it gets an 8/10. Thanks
Mrs Forster.
With a weakened bowling line up B Jones and R Embley held the fort. 260
seemed like a decent total, however the 2nd team pitch had an extremely
short boundary so keeping tight lines and a full length was the main
word from the captain over tea. Embley bowled out his allotted 13 overs,
1 for 71, first change at the other end, in steps Lawrence ‘biscuit’
Brown. The match hung on a knife-edge, something needed to happen and
happen it did. Contender for over of the century, three wicket maiden
for Brown, perfect, excepted for calling “catch it” to himself which
picked up a well deserved fine under the regulation of Morpeth Cricket
Club.
This left Ponteland, who before this looked strong at 102 for 4, still a
way to go. Morpeth from then on looked like winning and winning
comfortably, only needing nine of the usual ten wicket as R Bell was
absent from injury, B Jones came back on to clean up the rest of the
Ponteland attack with his usual 4 wickets for a slightly more expensive
56.
Morpeth won the match by 68 runs.
Man-of-the-Match: Jimmy Ingram
Richard Embley
