14th June 2008 - 2nd XI - Seaton Burn to Ashes as Morpeth ‘Urn’ a Victory

Morpeth continued their promotion push away to Seaton Burn. The form has been questionable at times but with the return of Stuart (Mad Dog) Hills and Paul (Pockets) Jackson, Morpeth entered this fixture with renewed vigour.

Morpeth II’s have stopped tossing a coin. Chris Maxted just chooses what he wants to do and we all get on with it. On a putting green like wicket it was obvious that the ball would do the work and so the skipper put Seaton Burn in to bat first.

7th June 2008 - 1st XI - Morpeth Stumble at Percy Main

Morpeth travelled to Percy Main on Saturday looking to extend their lead over Percy Main who sat only a point adrift before play. However, it did not go to plan for the league leaders and Percy Main took top spot by the end of the day.

Reagan won the toss and Morpeth batted first on what seemed to be a track that would make life difficult for the bowlers. This was not the case and Morpeth soon realised this as Reynolds was bowled by the slingy Nihalraj without scoring. Leason was digging in at the other end by new man Reagan looked bright until one stayed low from Nihalraj to trap the skipper LBW. Alleway joined Leason and the pair worked hard to build innings' and rescue the visitors.

7th June 2008 - 2nd XI - So the Saying Goes

Morpeth 2nds went into this fixture with a weakened team due to non-availability of a number of first team player, so were without key players Lawrence Brown and Jamie Forster.

Benwell & Walbottle, as it stood, were top of the league and the inform team to beat. The two flies in the ointment for this week were the lack of Umpires and the lack of bails. The latter problem half solved we all got to work.

31st May 2008 - 1st XI - Forster Saves the Day for Morpeth

Morpeth were back to winning ways on Saturday at home to Consett, but the game was in the balance right to the end. Having lost the toss, Morpeth’s bowlers began at their usual high standard. Despite another good spell Horner was wicketless, as was David Gower look-a-like Jimmy Craigs.

Skipper Reagan soon entered the attack though and a quicker ball had Huntsman trapped LBW for 9. Jack Palmer’s nippy in-swing did for number three Cummings, as a return catch was ballooned back to the enigmatic all-rounder.

31st May 2008 - 2nd XI - The Morpeth Revolution Spins its Way to Victory

As my old man used to say it never rains it pores. This has little to do with the fixture Morpeth 2nd Team had on Saturday away to Consett so I’ll get on shall I…

A tricky little ground to find especially when you are given directions by the vice-captain which included such things as “its just passed Tesco”, let me be the first to inform those of you who do not know, Consett definitely does not have a Tesco’s near the cricket pitch.

Never the less we made it and C Maxted the regular captain intentionally lost the toss on an ‘interesting’ wicket. Last course of Sunday dinner comes to mind.

26th May 2008 - 2nd XI - Ingram and Brown see off Ponteland

Bank Holiday Monday 26th May 2008, everywhere else bright sunshine except Morpeth 2nd Team pitch, where the wind blew strongly. C Maxted won the toss (I’m going to stop putting this because its getting boring) and decided to bat first on a green hard wicket against Ponteland.

Meikle and Cowell opened the batting, Meikle looked in good form hitting a quick 34 before being dismissed. Then a fall of wickets for Morpeth finding themselves at 46 runs for 3 wickets, in steps J Ingram. On the back of a collective run total of 4 runs from three games Ingram needed to shine. And that he did, in bucket loads.

24th May 2008 - 2nd XI - Morpeth languish over Lanchester

After a dismal display mid week in what proved to be a 18/20 game not in Morpeth’s favour, the 2nd team had the second in a run of three home fixtures at Longhirst.

Chris ‘the terminator’ Maxted, tossed that coin, the crowd gasped, the coin dropped, and of course, Maxted won the toss.

Morpeth Batted first. Stephen ‘Electrolux’ Cowell started in his usual spot accompanied by E Brown, a timely return to Saturday cricket after a boozy spell in the South Hemisphere.

10th May 2008 - 1st XI - Palmer Blasts Morpeth Past Alnwick

Morpeth followed a convincing mid-week display in the Twenty20 cup against Percy Main with a dominant performance at home to Alnwick on Saturday. A one-sided affair ended with 20 points for the home side to continue their immaculate start to the season.

Morpeth won the toss and elected to bat, with the track looking flatter than it turned out to be. Openers Reynolds and Leason were watchful when stocky right-hander Leason was caught miraculously by veteran Thompson at point for 15.

10th May 2008 - 2nd XI - Morpeth Prosper as Alnwick Fall

In the words of Bob Marley “The sun is shining weather is sweet yeah”. Finally it is here. Morpeth 2nd Team made the trip up to Alnwick for the second away fixture of the season.

Chris Maxted did as he always does and won the toss choosing to bat first on a slightly green wicket.

Morpeth were confident going into a fixture where the opposing team had been bowled out for 30 runs the week before.

3rd May 2008 - 1st XI - Morpeth’s Strong Start Continues

Morpeth continued their 100% record so far this term with a comfortable victory at Whickham on Saturday. Reagan lost the toss and it was no shock when the visitors were asked to bat on another green top with overcast conditions. The openers had to work hard against some disciplined bowling early on but Reynolds and Leason looked to be weathering the storm when Reynolds was unluckily adjudged to have nicked a delivery from South-African Parr for 13. Morpeth continued to falter as Reagan was trapped by Moore’s medium pace, leg before on 10.

Leason was showing his experience though and the punchy right-hander was joined by Maxted who looked positive early on against both seamers. Helped by some friendly 1st change seam bowling, Leason began looking more expansive. However on 24, after a cleanly hit straight six Maxted was LBW to May, and Leason followed soon after also LBW for 46, despite what appeared to be an inside edge.

3rd May - 2nd XI - Morpeth v Whickham at Longhirst Hall

Unfortunately the wet weather earlier in the week had left he Longhirst square and outfield far too wet for a pitch to be prepared. So despite the good weather on Saturday the match was cancelled due to the ground being unfit without a ball being bowled.

26th April 2008 - 1st XI - Leason Leads Morpeth to Dream Start

Morpeth started the season in emphatic style at home to Burnopfield on Saturday, with new signing Darren Leason leading the way in a sound display from a young home side. On a day when cricket seemed unlikely, Morpeth played the green Longhirst conditions to perfection.

Skipper Reagan won the toss and decided that the slightly damp wicket would suit his bowlers, and he looked to be proved right as curly seamer James Craigs took the wicket of opener Atkinson for 1, as the captain took an opportunist catch at slip after the right hander had inside edged onto his pad. Craigs continued to bowl well and use the seaming wicket with Jones but veteran Allen and local professional Baxter managed to work through a tough phase of play and keep their wickets in tact.

26th April - 2nd XI - Does anybody know any cricketers?

Morpeth Second team began their campaign much to the surprise of everyone involved against Annfield Plain away. A brief hiatus in a dismal display of weather left the window wide open for Morpeth to put on a carnival performance, smashing our way into the new season and rocketing to the top of the league in an early bid to gain promotion. Unfortunately the team who elected to bat first after C Maxted with slight looser trousers than last year, won the toss and were then bowled out for 77, a lesser figure that sandwiches consumed by the Lawrence Brown at tea, which deserves a mentioned as it was an impressive spread, thumbs up to the tea lady.
