22nd May - 2nd XI - Cal-tastic for Morpeth
Having comprehensively outplayed Shotley
Bridge the week before, Morpeth entered this game in high spirits. A
couple of changes were needed as Jonny Wailes had to attend to family
matters and Jimmy Ingram had taken a sabbatical to study for his exams.
Back in stepped Skipper Chris Maxted and Sandy Meikle. The Morpeth lads
were met by a glorious Summer’s day at Longhirst with temperatures in
the mid twenties and a hard if slightly dry pitch.
Once the opposition had finally navigated there way to the ground,
arriving as the game was due to start, the toss was won by Maxted who
had no hesitation in sending his batsmen out to make some hay. This
proved to be very easy early on as the weaknesses in the Leadgate
bowling attack, they were missing their opening two bowlers, were
cruelly exposed by Cal Urwin and Stephen Cowell.

15th May - 1st XI - Top Four Clash Goes to
the Wire
Morpeth's winning start came to an end despite a great team effort. The
home side batted first at Longhirst and suffered an early blow when Jon
Harbottle was caught on three off the bowling of Angus, but Dylan
Dursingham and Jonny Craigs gave them a good platform to build with a
good mixture of defence and attack.
The score progressed to 72 then Dursingham was bowled by Brown for 44
and Craigs followed soon after when he was caught off the same bowler.

15th May - 2nd XI - Shotley Forst to Submit
by Nick
Morpeth travelled to Shotley Bridge with a
few players feeling the effects of Blake's coming out party the night
before. Needless to say that didn't stop their desire to maintain the
winning run as they look to establish themselves in the B1 division.
Loz Brown duly followed Chris Maxted's
tossing performance with yet another win and elected to bat. With the
sun slowly coming out conditions looked good for batting and with a
strong line-up Morpeth were confident of posting a good total. Morpeth
started well with both Jonny Wailes and Stephen Cowell despatching fours
to the boundary. However Cowell’s bails were removed by Stokoe in the
third over bringing Andrew Poxton to the crease and he endured a torrid
time with the ball moving both ways before nicking one to the keeper for
0. Cal Urwin followed Cowell by crashing a beautiful cover dive for four
before having his stumps ruffled by Wood.

15th May - 2nd XI - Morpeth Hit Perfect 10
Morpeth’s cricketers are leading the way in
a novel initiative to help leukaemia sufferers.
If you could score ten in cricket then Morpeth players did at Shotley
Bridge on Saturday.
Morpeth cricket club became the latest club to sign up for the “Cricket
Against Leukaemia” campaign organised by Shotley Bridge Cricket Club and
Derwentside Round Table.

8th May - 1st XI - Harb's Lays the
Foundations for Success
Morpeth made it three wins out of three in
the league with their excellent batting total too much for Lintz to
handle.
The visitors batted first and got off to a decent start, with Dylan
Dursingham regularly finding the boundary. His attacking innings of 37,
which featured six fours and one six, came to an end when he was
frustratingly run out.
But Morpeth then took the initiative, with Jonny Craigs joining Jon
Harbottle. Both played good solid cricket, with bad balls punished with
fours and sixes.

8th May - 2nd XI - Cracking Win from
Adversity
After a win the previous week where the
bowling had delivered on a green wicket at Sacriston, Morpeth returned
home to Longhirst for the first time this season. They found a hard
wicket with a decent covering of grass that looked like it would offer a
bit for the ball early on before becoming easier to bat on. The seconds
had a couple of changes from the previous week, with Stephen Cowell
returning from his excursion to Ireland with the rugby club and Wild
Bill Thornton making his seasonal debut, they replaced Loz Brown, who
was obviously at a stag do, and Cal Urwin who was beautifying himself at
a surf competition.
At the toss the visiting skipper, Paul Armstrong, called correctly and
then decided to let Morpeth make first use of the strip. Even with the
overcast conditions and cold wind this came as a surprise to Chris
Maxted and his players. Morpeth opened up with Jonny Wailes and Stephen
Cowell back in tandem and after an early chance from Wailes had flown
through the legs of first slip the two settled down to the task at hand.
However, just as the scoreboard was beginning to tick along and both
batsmen looked settled, Wailes sold his partner down the river with
neither paddle or boat.

1st May - 2nd XI - Beejay Swings It
Following the opening day defeat to
Newcastle City confidence had been restored by a mid week victory over
the same team in the Division B Cup. Morpeth therefore entered this game
away at Sacriston hopeful of registering the first league victory of the
season. They were greeted by a damp and green wicket, grey overcast
conditions and a typical cold early May day in the North East. It was a
definite bowl first wicket, but unfortunately Maxted couldn’t prevail at
the toss and Sacriston Captain Hilton inserted Morpeth for a bat.
Wailes and Urwin continued their opening partnership from Wednesday in
the absence of Cowell. Sacriston started confidently through Lawes and
in Straughair’s first over he bowled Wailes for nothing, not the start
that Morpeth were looking for and things were not about to pick up.
After a glorious drive through the covers for four Urwin was bowled by
Lawes the very next ball for only 6 runs. The ball appeared to stick in
the wicket and Urwin was through with his shot by the time the ball cut
back through the gate to dislodge his stumps. Morpeth had been quickly
reduced to 6 for 2 by the swinging and seaming new ball.

24th April - 2nd XI - Step Up Poses Problems
Morpeth went in to the new season and in to
the unknown on Saturday as the second team took its place in division B1
for the first time since the two leagues split in 1999. Morpeth were
confident having had an excellent season last year and having been
crowned champions of B2. The team was bolstered by the addition of Cal
Urwin from Ashington to enhance the batting line up and the team entered
the game confident of a good showing.
The weather was warm and pleasant for the end of April and on winning
the toss skipper Chris Maxted invited Newcastle City to make first use
of the pitch. Morpeth opened up with Nick Rose and Ben Jones and after a
couple of tight overs built pressure Rose got the breakthrough. Trapping
Usman Khalid LBW for none and giving Morpeth the early initiative.
However, they failed to capitalise as Assad Mohammed and Hussain began
to build a good partnership, although Jones will feel unlucky not to
have won an LBW against Mohammed when he was still settling in.
